Remember When?
It was 1985 going on 1986, and we were living in a John Hughes movie. Remember? Big hair, Aqua Net, and Swatch watches?
Ronald Reagan was president, the Cold War was still a thing, and Mikhail Gorbachev was the new Soviet guy with that famous birthmark. “We Are the World” made us all cry in our cars and sing in the hallways. The Challenger hadn't yet—but we all remember exactly where we were that January morning when it did.
On TV, we were flipping between Family Ties, Cheers, Moonlighting, and The Cosby Show. And yeah—we had actually to flip channels by hand.
The Bears were Super Bowl champs in January ’86, and '86 even had their rap video (look it up—The Super Bowl Shuffle). Meanwhile, in KC, George Brett was still the guy, and we were still basking in the Royals' win from October ‘85.
Mus'85 Are you kidding? Whitney Houston stopped, Madonna was in full Desperately Seeking Susan mode, and we all had Thriller on cassette—even if it was technically from ’82. Bon '82i, Mr. Mister, and Simple Minds ruled the airwaves, and Phil Collins was basically on every song for three straight years.
Ferris skipped school, Pee-wee had a big adventure, and Back to the Future made us all want a DeLorean (maybe a hoverboard too).
Gas was under a buck, MTV still played music, and the future was bright—especially if you were wearing neon shades.
